How to make Decking non slip?

Slipping on a deck is no fun in any way – it is in fact, a nightmare experience. Decks are especially prone to becoming slippery during the winter due to the moisture from the cold weather. Regular cleaning of your deck will keep you safe. How so? Although ice from winter is a slip risk already, that is not the only reason slips may occur during the winter. The combination of organic matter and moisture will lead to the build-up of mold, moss, and algae. These growths can only be checked when you keep your deck clean.

Another quick fix may be getting nonslip mats. All you need to do is throw the mats at the areas you step on frequently. However, mats are not so secure and if you must cover a large area of your deck with nonslip mats, you would only be masking the beauty of your deck. On the other hand, you could make use of nonslip coating. Adding a bit of texture feel to the deck will ensure shoes get a better grip. Before adding a nonslip coating, it would always be ideal to make sure the paint or varnish type is one that is compatible with your deck so you do not leave indelible marks behind.

If your deck does not have a roof above, keeping snow away would be near impossible. Snow and its accompanying ice are slip risks. Nonetheless, it is important ensure your intended snow removal method does not damage your deck. A shovel will do a great job of scraping off the ice. A plastic shovel will be a better option to avoid damaging the board. You could also use ice melts such as calcium chloride and rock salt for ice removal. However, ice melts could damage the deck boards. Either way, be sure to use a safe method to ensure your deck remains clean – and nonslip.

If you don’t want to use a mat and still want to ensure a non slip surface on your decking, you can opt for our ultra non-slip treatment on our co-extruded decking which has gone through extensive treatment on our decking to ensure maximum non-slipperiness.
